An Integrative Approach to the Facade System
The bespoke design requirements of this landmark development, required integrating multiple systems to meet technical requirements including acoustic and energy. The horizontal bands that curve around from the high street combine the Schueco FW50+.SI curtain wall system with the precast panels. A band of large fixed panes are structurally glazed for horizontal continuity offering uninterrupted views. Above this, a continuous line is formed from a deep capping element. At high level, a line of AWS75.SI+ windows form a band of heavier matt powder coated aluminium frames, before a return to the Portland stone precast panels above to form the next band.
In addition to the FW50+.SI, the project uses Schueco AWS75.SI+ for windows and ADS75SI for doors throughout. These systems contribute to the building achieving its 35% improvement to Part L energy use requirements.Sited on the second most polluted UK high street after Oxford Street, air is NO₂ filtered, operable windows are for purge venting only. Traffic noise is acoustically controlled through the curtain walling system design. Acoustic and fire performance were enhanced using Siderise mullion inserts. The AWS75.SI+ were combined with slim actuators to form automatically opening vents.
